Beautifully written! I couldn't have said it better my self. I do have one point to add however. As you mention, the majority of this country once believed in segregation. Did that make it right? I am so tired of hearing the so called "religious right" (I refuse to capitalize that term) cry about how the majority fo the country voted against gay marriage so we should let the majority rule. Well, for one, the GLBT community is far from equal in population so if left up to the majority, we will never have equal rights (even though we pay taxes) and at one time, a majority of this country didn’t believe women should have the right to vote. Did that make it right? The majority of this country once opposed interracial marriage. Did that make it right?

Now, if you think on a global scale, at one time, a majority of Germans thought Jews should be killed. Did that make it right? Or going back even further, at one time, a majority of the world’s population though the world was flat. So, was the world flat?

And lastly, before I step down off my soap box, Christians are by no means the majority in the world. So, should the majority religions be able to tell Christians how or who to worship?

Christine,
I agree with Jewel 100%. Here we have a Black president-elect, when before 1965 and the passage of the Voting Rights Act, many Blacks (especially in the South) had to pay a "poll tax" if they even had the nerve to show up to vote.
With Stonewall happening 4 years later, I still doubt that in 4 years, gays will enjoy the same rights as heteros. And as Gregg points out, it's the heteros who are engaging in the riskiest of sexual behavior today, as is seen by the rise of all STD's in straight teens today, as opposed to gay teens, where STD's are going down.
What's going to happen when the so-called "soccer moms" have HIV+ straight kids...you think they'll take a second to say "dammit, I wish my kid was gay - and healthy?" I'm not gonna hold my breath...

Christine,
Friends do not stop being friends because of differences of opinions. If you lose "a person in your life" because they are at odds with your point of view, then you are lucky to have lost them, as they were never your friends to begin with. Why would you want to hear "goodbye" when what you should be saying to YOURSELF is "thank God!"

What if I told you that you couldn't get married because you were African American? Asian? Mexican?

What if I wasn't the only one telling you that you couldn't get married for those reasons? What if there was an entire group of people telling you that?

What would you do? Would you file a lawsuit against me? Would you want to pummel me to no end because I discriminated against you?

Well that is what Californians have done. The majority voted to Approve Proposition 8, banning same sex couples from getting married.

How is this different than telling minorities that they cannot marry? Isn't this discrimination at its lowest point?

One argument used is "Sanctity of Marriage" - however, as you can see from my previous bulletin that if that argument is to be used then divorce needs to be banned also.

Another argument used is teachings in schools. Schools do not teach that a man sticks his penis in another man and women don't. In fact, in second grade all children hear is that Freddies dad is married to Freddies other dad. Or Freddies mom is married to Freddies other mom. The details on sex do not get explained until 5th? 6th? grade, in sex education class WHICH YOU ARE ALLOWED TO DECLINE YOUR CHILDS ATTENDANCE. By then in this day and age hopefully as a parent you will have already discussed some of the details with your child yourself and not leave it up to the schools solely.

I have met and known children who were informed as early as the 1st and 2nd grade, BY THEIR OWN PARENTS, that a member of the family is Gay. In explanation the kid was told that the Gay family member, who was male, liked other males the way daddy and mommy liked each other. This child is not/was not affected by this idea. In fact, because of it, he can still respect the family member and still love the family member because he was made knowledgeable about the subject.

In conclusion, the way I see it is this:

When African Americans were discriminated against they protested and won their freedoms and rights. The Gay and Lesbian community are doing this now. Taken all the way to the Supreme Court THEY WILL WIN. You are not permitted to discriminate based on race, gender, sexuality, in the workplace nor in life. Forcing your rules on others will eventually be turned.

You may not feel as though you have discriminated against anyone. However, if you look back at the beginning of my note you will see that it really is discrimination. Try doing it to other people.

As a Christian I believe that God has His plan in life. I actually feel that you, by forcing your hand, are impeding God's ultimate plan.

I know this will make many people mad. Please don't stop being friends with me because I have a different view on this then you do. If I lose you as a friend because of this tell me goodbye before you go. Don't be a coward.

If we look at the US Civil War, we still have textbooks calling it the "War of Northern Aggression." Maybe we should have a "War of Sexual Biblical Complicance." Those who read the Bible, where sex is for procreation ONLY could take a state, move there, and live by Biblical mores.

Sex between only a husband and wife (or wives, if you want to be Biblical), no masturbation, nothing about enjoyment, sex that consists of ONLY intercourse, no abortion available for the woman who will surely die during childbirth - leaving her many children motherless and her huband (possibly) wifeless. Oh, and let's not forget that all women would be required to marry their brothers-in-law if their own husbands died - the Bible says that too. Loveless sex is fine too - if the woman no longer loves her husband: doesn't matter. She still must continue to "go forth and multiply" with him.

Let's take the "Religious Right," and let them go to a place where ONLY sex sanctioned by the Bible is permitted. This wouldn't be a "pick and choose" from the Bible State. It would be a REAL SEXUAL BIBLE STATE.

I wonder...would the state be as large as Texas or as small as Rhode Island? I'd bet Rhode Island. And then the Religious Right could take all of the Electoral Votes from that State. I could live with that. Easily. I could live with them seceding without a thought as well. Then they could put up their own STONEWALL to keep people from fleeing. I doubt that too many people would be dying to get in.

Gregg,

An outstanding post that covers so much in so few words. What struck me the most is you referral to the bible-thumpers who wish to dictate political policy. The Constitution would NOT have passed without the concept of separation of church and state. The church has no business in dictating state - or federal - policy,

With Obama as President-Elect, I can foretell a trend that things like prayer breakfasts will come to an end. This will hopefully put the Moral Majority into a Moral Minority- and the Republicans did it to themselves. Rush Limbaugh doen't set policy, nor should he and his cohorts ever have done so.

Even if Obama is a Religious man, he was elected to a Political Post. I am hopeful that he will take care of the economy, the wars, healthcare, social security, re-building goodwill around the world - and stay OUT of people's bedrooms. He stated in the debates that he would. Like you, I would like to see words turn into Political promise-keeping.

For those who oppose gay marriage, which would you pick: a far better economy with gay marriage or a worsening economy to eliminate gay marriage? Eliminating abortion for efforts diverted away from cleaning up the economy? Let President-Elect Obama function as an Executive, not a Preacher!

Hi Gregg,
After having this happen to us too many times, we got one card on which we ONLY do memberships and monthly fees. If we cancel, and they still bill us, we suspend the credit card - and put all of our other "monthlies" on a different card. As soon as the point gets through that they can't have our money, we "unsuspend" the card, put our other monthly fees back on that card, and go on our merry way.

Does it take a bit of time? Yes. Is it worth it? Every single penny! We always try to have one card that is kept "active" each month with around $100.00 in charges - that we pay off immediately. That way, we have an "empty" credit card to move all of our "monthlies" to - and can go back and forth. With a "no annual fee" card, it works like a charm!

To Oktober5 -

I banned your IP address, as you're spamming my blog with B.S. comments. You seem to like to make up usernames as well (the wife) etc.

I don't what your problem is but, why don't you simply go spend your time spamming someone else's blog. You and your merry group of friends had enough fun over here for a while and now that fun is over.

BTW, you seem to have a personality disorder and you might want to get that checked out.

I imagine we had the same great dreams last night. We did it! We did it! Paul and I are over the moon!

You did a great job designing the new sight...it looks terrific! And the content, though different, is excellent! Are you still interested in selling the site, or do you plan to continue? Blog Reviews, Political Commentary, Ann Rice...I thought that a teacher was buying bloggrrl, but it looks like we already have one here!

Please let me know if you're still interested in selling...maybe we could do some sort of partnership?

I love your design, your content - everything...but I REALLY miss Rita :-( . (No offense, of course!) In her own way, she WAS a teacher, and I learned so much from her!

Well said. This was a pivotal election in American history. The people of the nation showed that we are all ready for change, no matter who the winner was.

I didn't know about this. And I too find it odd that she wants to be forgiven for the books she has written. I bet she's not rushing to pay the royalties back.

Like you, I find it tough to believe folk when they make claims like that to the whole world.

I wonder what the new book is going to be called? Maybe "Dracula Sees The Light" or something.

Hi Gregg - Well at least we've got the results we wanted. I'm certain Obama is going to do a great job. I feel a whole lot more positive about the future of the world today. He's shown us all that everything is possible, if we believe we can do it.

Bill was never in it for personal gain. I remember when he visited Florida and stopped to assist those who were in a horrific accident on Alligator Alley.

True, he was never a D.C. insider and in fact, differed with Bush on many of his positions. I think Bill just saw the D.C. scene for what it was and while he wanted to do good, he knew the cards were stacked against him.

As Senate Majority leader, he was terrific, however, you're correct in that the position was to high-profile for a man who simply kept a low-profile and worked his magic in the background.

I hope he'll be back in 2012. I truly believe that if Bill had been able to wait it out - he would have been a phenomenal candidate and would have given Obama a run for his money.
