The Three Little Blogs: A Cautionary Tale July 14, 2007

Filed under: Metablogging — Just another writer... @ 6:24 pm

the three little blogs
Once upon a time there were three little blogs. They collectively decided that it was time to leave blogspot.com and move on to their very own domains.

The first little blog was very lazy, and had somewhat of a “get rich quick” mentality. He quickly chose a hosting company that was too expensive, and after getting the automatic install of WordPress 1.0.2 and using the default theme, began to post. The very first thing he did was put lots of Adsense on his site. He wrote two posts every month and was quite happy, if a bit puzzled by the lack of cash flow.

The second little blog put a bit more effort into his work. He customized his header and even downloaded a few plug-ins. He posted a few times every week, on whatever he felt like writing about at the time. His place was charming and sometimes even interesting. Now and then, he would carefully craft a post that he could insert an affiliate link into, although at times, this made him feel a tad guilty, since he knew nothing about the product. Overall, he drifted along happily, and was pleased with the $20 ad revenue that he earned each month.

The third little blog was a serious sort of fellow who in another fairy tale would have went to business school. He carefully chose a hosting company that many other blogs had recommended. After looking at many themes, he chose the one that would best meet his needs. He then sat down and proceeded to write many, many pages of quality content, making certain to include cornerstone posts that would provide flagship content forever.

The third little blog worked late into the night. He realized that in addition to working on himself, he’d better network and make some blog friends and partners. He joined social networks and visited and commented on many other blogs. He looked for opportunities to monetize his blog in meaningful and profitable ways. He rapidly became one of the most popular blogs on his street.

Of course, life doesn’t usually meander along in such a peaceful manner. After a while, the big bad blog came along. This big blustery blog looked ready to mow down anything in its path, and indeed, it did.

The big bad blog stumbled upon the first little blog.

He did not bother to knock politely at the door. Instead, he huffed and puffed, and pretty much obliterated the first little blog, who was quite overwhelmed, and canceled his hosting arrangement before he had even finished running all the way to the second little blog’s place.

The second little blog held his ground for a bit, but soon became chronically depressed and had to be admitted to the Rehabilitation Center for Ambitious But Clueless Bloggers.

When the big bad blog paid a visit to the third little blog, he was in for a surprise. Although he huffed and he puffed, and the third little blog ended up with a severe but temporary case of writer’s block, the third little blog persevered. In fact, the third little blog felt a bit inspired by the big bad blog, although personally he was a nicer sort of fellow.

As it turned out, the third little blog’s two brothers ended up working at Walmart and Starbucks, respectively. The third little blog kept on posting and keeping current in his niche, and was soon able to quit his day job selling watermelons. The big bad blog lived happily ever after, which pissed the first two little blogs off immensely, and they harbored a lifelong resentment towards him, which expensive therapy never remedied.

The end.

I had insomnia last night. It scares me.

Decoration without lighting specific corners and painting seems very dull. A house must be furnished with well lit surroundings, table lamps placement on the side tables and chandeliers on the ceiling adds to the beauty of the house. With innovations and the coming of latest technology in the lighting history new light bulb models are discovered which take up very minimal amount of energy to light. Thus providing for both decorative and energy efficient purposes.

I loved reading this and at the same time felt really baffled because I actually played with idea of writing my post about what you can learn about blogging from reading fairytales based on The Three Little Pigs just like that.

Only was I thinking about it a week before this article was published and not because I couldnt sleep, but because I was trying to come up with a great idea for a post revolving around the number three (for a Daily Blog Tips project).

Funny how something as strange as a connection between blogging and this particular fairy tale is blogged about twice within a week. :-)
Since I doubted that I could make it work like I wanted I chose to summarize the original and then write about what you could learn from it and how you could interpret it. Maybe I should have written it at night as you did because it is not as much fun to read as yours.

Perhaps is it however, (even) more enlightening? You find my story by clicking my name. Should you be so inclined.

I would absolutely love to hear what you think about it, how you value the differences and which you think will teach particularly new bloggers the most

Man, I didn’t know money could even really be MADE by blogging. I’m quite comfortable in my little blogspot for the mo!

  102. Kurt Says:

Generally enjoyed the post, but I have to break up the self-congratulatory bubble most comments seem to be caught up in.

You see, there were OTHER little piggies that just aren’t even part of the story. Some went off to a totally different forest that the big bad blog wasn’t even interested in. Some never cared about monetizing their blog because it really WAS just a part of pursuing their own personal bliss (which was part of the what blogging was SUPPOSED to be about originally anyway). And some weren’t “piggies” at all– perhaps they were themselves even “wolves in “piggy clothing”– with bigger fish to fry than worrying about where they sit in an arbitrarily determined “three-tier” pecking order.

If the fable mirrors an individual “piggy’s” aspirations and objectives, it is indeed an EXCELLENT and even inspiring cautionary tale, indeed. However, there are a LOT of non-piggies living in the forest too…

  103. Andrew Odlum Says:

I am very impressed. You explained so many key elements of blogging all in one little story. I love learning information in a non-traditional way and I think this story certainly achieves this goal. I am sorry that you were suffering from insomnia when you wrote this, but hopefully the end result gives you at least a little comfort.

  114. Travis Says:

That’s a great story! Too bad I read it at work, I feel kind of like I need a nap now. ;-)
Hmmm, from the above categories I guess I am pig 2.5. I definitely started as pig 2, but quickly realized that if I wasn’t having fun, and engaged, with my posting the whole thing wasn’t worth it. Now I post on a focused set of subjects, and post only when what I have to say is authentic. The funny thing is, I fond myself posting a lot more frequently, and energetically, as a consequence.
