I Bought a Girls Gone Wild DVD and Got Paid $140 March 24, 2008

Yesterday, I decided to check out one of my own Adsense ads. Boy is it difficult not to click on those things myself! Anyway, I opened another window and typed in the URL. It was to www.projectpayday.com. Yes, this is an affiliate link. No, I am not trying to get rich off of you clicking on it. I get paid an entire dollar if you enter your name and email address. This is not how I made the $140.

Anyway. I signed up, which was a pretty painless (and free) process. This gave me access to an online manual that had links to forums along with a bunch of other stuff. I learned a lot and decided to try it.

This is how it works. You know those sites that offer the free gifts that you’re pretty sure that no one ever gets? Well, people actually do get them, and there’s a way to game the system in order to get lots of them. Here’s what you do. You go to one of the forums, and there are people there waiting to pay you to sign up at one of these sites and complete offers like free Netflix trials and so on. Basically, people are paying you to use their referral IDs so that they will have enough referrals to get the prizes, which are nifty things like $599 deposited into your PayPal. Here’s a typical site:

So what I did was sign up as a referral for some people. I got a total of $140 for doing offers on 4 sites, which amounted to about 9 or 10 annoying offers. I say annoying because you DO have to keep track of them so that you can cancel them in a week or so and not get charged for them later, which is what the companies want to happen.

Not all of the offers were free. I spent $10 on a Girls Gone Wild DVD, which promises to be a great white elephant gift, or perhaps even a prize on this site. I also bought an espresso kit and a one month hosting plan. I ended up spending $50 on the offers that I completed that weren’t free. So really, I only netted $90. Still, it didn’t take all that long, so it’s all good.

Getting paid the $140 (and getting some stuff) was gravy. The real money is in getting the referrals, which you can simply pay people to do for you, or get through other means, just like people do when they’re doing affiliate links. For the $599 prize (one dollar below what they’d have to report you earned to the IRS :-) ), you have to get eleven referrals. So do the math, and you’ll see that you can get half of that by paying referrals. There’s a site that I like that I’m going to work with that will allow me to pay people $40 to complete offers. I like this. It’s like a game, and that makes it fun for me.

I can’t believe I had never heard of this before.
You can definitely make money doing it, how much remains to be seen. I’ll be keeping you posted as I work on this over the next couple of weeks.

I do not know what websites offer this kind of stuff, but I’ve heard of practices like these. It’s an extension to those “free iPod” commercial sites that we’ve seen so much of.

I was curious as to what you thought about that site. I clicked on it from your site (no payback required ;p) the other day and did everything except do some referrals. I showed it to my wife, and she threw something at me after three hours of tooling and tutorials. She thinks it’s hoaky, but she’s not very websavvy. I think it’s got great potential for earnings and I will do a few.

I’m glad you reported on the earnings. Just an advisory…you may get a cease and desist for this post. Project Paypal is kind of secretive about their processes. We’ll see. I think I’ll chart my progress on it, as well.

(By the way, I signed up as a way to get out of the PayPerPost dilemma. I figured for the same amount of time, I could use Project Payday for the short term without alienating my readers and then weaning off of it if the blog took off.)

Off to fight fires at my blog. Keep it up!

I’ll be interested in hearing about how this actually worked - if you have trouble canceling and whatnot. I just don’t know if it’s worth the amount of time it would take when you add in the follow up.
