My World, My Opinion…

I am horrible at organizing my bookmarks. I have a few hundred scattered around del.icio.us, and a few hundred more under the bookmarks tab. I have some things saved in Google notebook. It’s a real mess around here.

This state of affairs can make it difficult to organize my information, and thus meet some pretty important goals. Here is one that I have been working towards for the past five years.

I want to live in a mud hut.

I know, not your everyday goal, right? That was the idea when I bought this land in Taos, New Mexico, though.

Summer in Texas is like the inside of a dishwasher. I thought, why not have a summer vacation home? This is where the mud hut comes in, since I lack the quarter million necessary to buy ready-made. Anyway, I like mud huts.

Actually, I’m pretty interested in alternative housing in general. I dislike the interest rates the bank charges. I also dislike the treadmill at the gym. It would be more fun to expend energy building a house and get buff that way instead.

At any rate, here’s where the blog comes in. Instead of having 492 bookmarks scattered haphazardly around my computer, I could keep them on my new (freebie) blog. When I run across good plans or photos, I could post them. When I get around to actually building the thing, I could write about it. Then I would take on a bit of expert status and could do “alternative home building consulting” or something along those lines. I’m such a capitalist.

Check out what a cob house can look like. Mud huts aren’t so bad really.

And believe it or not, strawbale houses don’t mean you are like that dude in the popular but terrifying children’s story. Turns out they are pretty safe during earthquakes.

Here are a couple of books on the subject that I really like. I read The Straw Bale House until it literally began to fall about. I checked The Hand-Sculpted House out from the library, and it is currently on my wish list. Books…if I spent as much money on clothes I’d be the most mod fashionista in rural Texas.

    I recommend geodesic homes myself.

Hey, bloggrrl! I work in Taos! This is definitely the place for alternative building. Have you seen the “earthships”? Funny name, I know, but they are totally self-sustainable. They capture their own sun for power and heat; and also catch rainwater for use in the house. If you’re interested in solar power, check out Valverde Energy.

I’ve looked at those straw/mud/poo/cob houses before too. I think they’re like.. uber neat and stuff. I’m sure if I built one it would list to one side though lol.

Haha, awesome! I’ve always wanted to live in either an empty missle silo bunker kind of thing or in a mostly underground house, like Frodo’s in Lord of the Rings. I say we make a village where anybody can live in it with us just as long as they build an unconventional house. And then I can welcome them to town by inviting them over for a game of shot glass checkers! (which I got the other day, thank you again! I’ll post photos of me playing it soon :) )

Dang, I’ve missed a lot. I wanted to read what you were up to sooner, but I coulnd’t find where I’d bookmarked your site… Seriously. Now I’m all caught up, though.

that cobb house is nice! We’re planning to build a strawbale house.

A signed up for del.icio.us for the first time last week. I know, the last web junkie on the planet to do it. Some glitch ate all our bookmarks. I was heartbroken.

I, sort of, do what your taking about on my “other” blog. I’ve been doing reviews on all things online, and have a blog roll of non-blog sites. I’d love to read your blog with your links. Just what I need is more stuff online to look at.

On the house, how about a Yurt?

I keep meaning to get into that whole alternative house building scene but I have no land, no money, and live out of a backpack so now might not be the time. Would be cool to design one of those babies though.

Oh, and it’s nice to see I’m not the only one baffled by images in WordPress.

Tina not only have I not signed up for Delicious, I’ve never even visited the site in my life. I keep forgeting where to put the periods and then I get fed up and start daydreaming about straw bale houses.

Hi Michelle, I like your mud hut idea, very original. Also using a blog for something useful besides taking up free time is a good idea too. Good luck with the entrepreneurial endeavors! Emma

Dunno if it will work but I believe removing the tags at the end of the first ad code will bring both the ads side by side.

I saw a special on “green” home building that discussed in great length using straw bales for house building. I think it is a pretty neat idea. It is supposed to be very energy efficient.

I´m interested in alternative housing, too. Here are a couple that I absolutely love . . . maybe they´ll be inspiring to you, as well. :D

Cute house and great idea to live in a mudhouse for you!
At one point I too wanted to take on the task of building my own house, then I sobered up (me, not you).

Hey, good luck and maybe some of us can help you built the place like habitat for humanity. We could build that puppy, err mudhouse in a week or less! Just an idea.
