My World, My Opinion…

Bad Tooth, Good Dentist January 24, 2008

I had an interesting experience yesterday. It turns out that most of the jaw pain has been caused by a wisdom tooth. The tooth lies mainly below the surface of my gums, so I was surprised when my family dentist said he could pull it out.

I went, sat in the chair, got numbed up, and then the dentist stuck his hand in my mouth for a few seconds. He then removed his fingers and took his gloves off. I thought, “Oh crap, he’s sending me to the oral surgeon after all.” Nope. He had already pulled it. I had thought he was just jacking around with that thing, that’s how painless it was. And no, I was not on anything–not even laughing gas! Today, I haven’t even taken a Tylenol. There is no bleeding. That guy is great!

All that time dreading the tooth pulling for nothing. But that’s okay.

Mine was pretty painless and fast too. And my wisdom tooth had to be pulled because it was growing sideways (as in, perpendicular to the normal teeth thus bumping into them). Since it was sideways, the dentist couldn’t just pull it straight up, and he couldn’t pull it sideways cuz there’s other teeth in the way. He had to cut it into four pieces. I thought this would take long because of all the work that has to go into it, but the dentist just did it really fast, and told me that it’s done shortly. I was thinking that he might tell me to go to an oral surgeon cuz that’s what the other dentist told me. I can definitely relate to that.

Somehow I was terrified when you said “He then removed his fingers”…

I’m glad it turned out so well for you. There have been incredible advances in dental technology over the years allowing for mostly painless treatment. Of course, having some SKILLS in that department doesn’t hurt either. That really helps alleviate patient fear, as so many new patients have come into our office scared to death, and when they’re all done they say it didn’t hurt a bit and didn’t know why they were so afraid.
